Army mottoWinged hourglass
A symbol for the passage of time; concretely represents the present as being between the past and the future. An understanding that while life is fleeting, we should live each moment to the fullest. If no action is taken, the sand can only flow one way - this symbolizes our capacity for new beginnings, and second chances, with only a turn of the glass.

Blackwork - Snowflakes
Water is a symbol of renewal and clarity. Ice (especially for Bucky) is a symbol of preservation and survival. Snow is an intermediary state between fluid water and solid ice. Snow falls gently and silently, and can symbolize the great power and strength that exists in the potential of one small thing. For Bucky, snow also helps him cope with the transitional state of being between two lives.Blackwork - Geometric
Blackwork is often as much about what is left out as it is about what is put in (negative space). Large portions of blackwork can also be quite a time commitment and can be quite painful. For Bucky, the geometric lines echo similar patterns on his cybernetic arm, but the process of being tattooed also helped ground him in his own flesh.Blackwork - Spiderweb
For Natasha.
Left Arm
Shouldercap - Etching
Because Steve insisted that the greatest and most noble Knights were adorned with detailed etchings on their suits of armor. And anyone that pulls a drowning man to safety, especially when he’s not sure if that man is friend or foe, is a Knight in his books.Red String of Fate
An East Asian belief originating from Chinese legend that says the gods tie a red cord around those that are to meet one another or help each other in a certain way. The deity in charge of “the red thread” is believed to be the old lunar matchmaker god who is also in charge of marriages. This magical cord may stretch or tangle, but will never break.Scroll Work - “Be Free”
Steve and Bucky have matching scroll work tattoos that spell out “Young Hearts (Steve) Be Free (Bucky)” when they cross their arms over one another (symbolizing their unbreakable link to each other). This is based on the song “Young Turks” released in 1981 (which Bucky discovered during his obsession with 80’s rock). In English slang, a “Young Turk” was a rebellious kind of teenager who would go against the grain.
Knuckles
Brooklyn
Bucky has knuckle tattoos that spell out “BROOKLYN” when his two fists are held together.
