A Matched Set of Winter Soldiers

An excellent and very well-written AU trilogy! The first part is tragic and heartbreaking, but has a happy ending. The second is a bit lighter but shows their difficulties adjusting to free life. And the third one is quite amusing as the matched set expands to a throuple.

Author's Summary:
In 1945, Steve Rogers trades himself to the Red Room in exchange for the Winter Soldier. They accept his offer, but don't let Bucky go. After all, their supersoldiers come as a matched set.

Excerpt:
Afterwards he is left alone with the Captain, or as alone as they have ever been, to calm him down while the techs prepare the tank for his long sleep. The Soldier unfastens the manacles and sifts his fingers through the fine hair, stringy and limp with sweat. He leans down and presses his lips to the Captain’s forehead, and they come away salty.

Today facts are not to be bartered, but given away for free. “Your name,” he murmurs, “is Steve.”

Bright feverish eyes track across his face. He keeps his voice low and their foreheads pressed together. There are secrets they have kept for decades, telegraphs passed between them bearing information more vital than that in any classified file. After the Soldier has gone out and done his killing, he too will be wiped and it will be the Captain’s turn to hold on to these fragile matters until he comes awake again. “You said you’d known me all my life,” he goes on, voice disguised by the clatter coming from the cryo chamber. “You said one day, after we killed them all, we’d run away to a place called Brooklyn. You called me Bucky.”

Steve mouths the name against his cheek, lips moving soundlessly, hands clutching at the Soldier’s arms with bruising force. They don’t have much time together. The Soldier talks fast. “They’re planning to sell us,” he adds. He has yet to work out the significance of this, but it seems like something the Captain will want to know. “The buyer is called HYDRA. I don’t want to be sold. But if they want you, they’ll have to have me too.”

Steve’s breathing quickens. He is still in too much pain to speak. The techs are coming back in. Desperately, in the seconds before they are pulled apart, the Soldier says, “Good night, Captain.”

One of the techs laughs, and receives a metal elbow to his cheekbone for his trouble. The others take them away, the Captain to the cryo chamber, the Soldier to be prepped for his mission. A matched set. It could be years before they meet again.

Author's Summary:
After years of captivity, Steve and Bucky still do their best to protect each other in the only way they know how.

Excerpt:
They are in the conference room with sixteen reporters and twenty-one cameras, and it is only T minus a few minutes until someone asks something stupid and everything goes to hell.

Bucky watches Steve with owlish intensity. The only thing his boyfriendpartnerthing hates more than people with questions is people with cameras, and his shoulders are already squaring into fighting stance, the careful showman’s blankness smoothing over his features. Steve can handle anything. When he feels like it, he can charm even the most cantankerous reporter into glazed quiescence. Bucky’s seen him do it.

The main problem: he’s also seen Steve revert under stress to fight-anything-that-moves mode and, while he finds it endearing, law enforcement officials and the general public do not.

The worst thing is that Bucky can see why they ask the things they do. After all, Captain America was something of an urban legend back in the war, until Steve and Bucky vanished from the face of the earth and Pegs parachuted out of the Valkyrie into the Arctic wastes. There are unanswered questions. Conspiracy theories. Even a movie. (Bucky saw it, though he wasn’t supposed to. He quite liked it. Poor sweet heroic Cap, purer than pure, with contact lenses that made his eyes just the right shade of cornflower blue. The Black Widow, scheming, voluptuous temptress, the Eve to his Adam. And his sinister Sergeant, brainwashed by resentment, who faked his death to lure the Captain into the Red Room’s arms.

Natalia found it hilarious. So did Bucky, until Steve put his fist through their flat-screen TV and they had to get a new one.)

Author's Summary:
The one where the Winter Soldier, the other Winter Soldier, and their ridiculous cat try to win Sam Wilson's heart.

Excerpt:
“Next time,” . . . [Steve says to Sam], “count to fifty before you go rushing into any gunfights.”

“A hundred,” Bucky says.

“Nah,” says Sam. His vision is so blurry Steve and Bucky seem to have melded into a single tank-like body, two-headed, eight-limbed, bristling all over with guns and knives and leather straps. “Gotta be fast. I keep showing up to missions only to find all the mooks dead already, or beaten into submission. S’weird.”

Above him, his uninvited guests exchange a glance. They look like a pair of seraphim with flaming swords, except far more demonic. So maybe just like demons, then. Bucky says, “Oh?”

“Yeah,” says Sam, squinting up at the indistinct halo of his face. “For weeks now. Funny, huh? Almost like someone made sure to get there first and do all the grunt work before I showed—“

Finally, finally, the conscious parts of his brain clank into motion. He says, “Wait, what?”

“What?” Steve echoes. Unlike Bucky’s rusty creak, his voice has a certain vintage sweetness that Sam is beginning to associate with suspenders and stockings and red-lipsticked women brandishing rivet guns.

“S’you,” says Sam thickly, with altogether more Archimedean triumph than the situation warrants. If he had been in a bathtub, and had any bodily strength left to speak of, he would have shouted Eureka. “You’re the ones who keep doing my missions for me, and beating everyone up before I—“

“—before you get yourself killed,” Steve says severely. His jaw is very square, but his eyes are large and round and oh, Sam thinks, really quite alarmingly blue. “So give us a head start. Like I said. Count to fifty.”

“A hundred,” Bucky says again. He lifts the bloody rag, sticks out his lower lip at the wound, and puts a fresh towel over it. “He’s faster than us in the air, Stevie.”

“Is not,” says Steve, sounding affronted.

“Is too.”

“Guys,” says Sam. “Guys, I’m right here.”

MEMORY

“Scrawled right there in huge red letters,
pockmarked by brick dust and written over
a dozen different bits of paper as well the wall,
was the word DISOBEY.”

Art inspired by Memory by . . . [orphan_account].
Read it and weep.

Memory by orphan_account

My Summary:
James the ex-Winter Soldier has no real memory of Steve or his life pre-Hydra. When Loki's staff comes into his hands, the situation reverses. James transforms into 1945 Bucky who has no memory of his Winter Soldier days. When Bucky learns the awful truth, he uses the Mind Stone from Loki's staff to turn himself back into James, so that James can continue to fight Hydra.

Excerpt (Chapter 1):
It took Steve a moment to understand the way his throat dried up and his stomach lurched at the serious look on Bucky's face. Fear, real fear, wasn't something he felt all that often. "No," he said. "Bucky, stop. We'll talk about this."

Bucky shook his head. "I can't see a way around it, Steve," he said. "I thought he was crazy." Steve immediately opened his mouth to argue. Bucky ignored him. "I saw that apartment, and the way people acted around me, and I thought... I thought he had to be crazy." Bucky grimaced. "But he's not. It's what you were trying to tell me, wasn't it? He's not crazy, he's scared. He's scared shitless."

"He—"

"I'm scared shitless."

Steve was cut off mid-sentence, mouth still open.

"Hydra's still out there, aren't they? Hydra still wants him. Disobey," Buck said. "He's scared they'll take him back. He's scared it'll all happen again. But he's wrong, you know. It wouldn't be the same if they got him again. He knows how to fight them. He got out." Bucky licked his lips. "It wasn't him who broke in the first place, was it? It was me."

Steve made a wordless sound of protest. Bucky ignored it. "It was me. The guy I am right now. I'm the one who fell off that bridge, I'm the one who got captured—"

"Bucky—"

Bucky looked sick. "The way I see it? I'm the one who became the Winter Soldier. He's the one who stopped."

He opened his mouth as if he was going to say something else, and then closed it again. He looked pale and drawn. There were dark bags under his eyes. Steve stared at him, at the odd blue light of the stone reflected in his eyes and the slight tremble around the corners of his lips. His flesh hand was knotted tight in the pocket of James's jacket, and his metal fingers flexed next to his thigh. Steve stared at him. He couldn't think of a single thing to say that would make it not true.

Russet Leaf

My Summary:

A short ficlet about the Winter Soldier's and Natalia's forbidden love in the Red Room. Written from James' POV.

Excerpts:

“And when I trained her, those eyes barely looked at my face; she was too focused on attacking me. But I tried to look at her; even her hair always veiled most of her features when she moved with her lethal precision against my body. Then the fiery red hair of hers would brush past my arms when I eventually strangled her neck from behind. It was satin-like, and it rested almost peacefully on my skin when she finally stopped flailing under my force. It, then, swept past my arms at the end when she at last walked away from my embrace, and it became a longing for me—the softness.” — Russet Leaf.

As she stood atop the snow-capped peaks, observing the target that might come into our sight, the sharp cold wind would tangle her hair, and the white snow always pierced through her silky red. It was really beautiful—her bright hair was so beautiful that I had to tear my gaze away from the scope of my sniper many times, and we almost lost our target. “Eyes on the target, Soldier,” she would warn me. — Russet Leaf. 🍂

A Classic WinterHawk Fic

["A quiet afternoon nap; winterhawk sketch . . .
Bucky is always hungry for skin contact
and Clint is happy to provide <3"

Ordinarily, I'm not a dedicated fan of WinterHawk, but this classic 2015 fic is a good read and I'm sure it must be one of the pillars of this pairing's popularity.

My Summary:
Clint is still recovering from being Loki's brainwashed pawn and then Steve rescues the Winter Soldier and now they're all living together in the Tower. Steve is about to have a nervous breakdown from dealing with an erratic Bucky and a jealous Tony. Fury gives Clint the mission of being Bucky's buddy to take some of the pressure off Steve. It works beyond anyone's wildest imaginings. Clint and Bucky are both hot messes, and that gives them lots in common.

Excerpt (Chapter 3):
“So there’s four of these films?” Bucky says with a frown as he balances an M&M on his metal thumb. He nudges Clint’s knee with his toe. “Do they all feature a middle aged cop running around with no shoes?”

Clint swallows his mouthful of pizza and then turns his face towards Bucky, eyes still turned towards the TV. Bucky flicks the M&M straight into his open mouth.

“Nah,” he says. “In the fourth one the middle aged cop blows up a helicopter with a car. Wearing shoes, though.”

Bucky snorts derisively. “Who needs a car to blow up a helicopter? I could blow up a helicopter with a paperclip.”

“I don’t doubt you,” Clint says finishing off the slice. He turns his face towards Bucky and opens his mouth for another M&M; Bucky dutifully obliges and Clint crunches it down with a grin. “Hey, we could turn this into a national sport.”

“All our years of sniper training comes down to whether I can feed you candy from three feet away without moving?” Bucky says.

“Well, you’re doing fuck all else with those years of training,” Clint says lazily, and the next M&M hits him on the temple. “Hey, that’s a waste of good candy,” he protests, plucking the M&M off of the blanket and popping it into his mouth.

“I want to do more with my training,” Bucky suddenly says. He’s holding an M&M between metal fingers, rolling it back and forth and staring at it like it holds the secrets to the universe. “Feel utterly useless sat here like some sort of broken part.”

And wow, that's honest and pretty fucking deep. And borne from nothing more than a tasteless joke about throwing candy around. Clint opens his mouth, closes it again. He tries again but still can’t find the words; gives up and scratches the back of his head awkwardly.

“Dont say anythin’ you’ll just hurt yourself,” Bucky sighs, all faint Brooklyn attitude. “I just wanted to say it.”

Fanart for "All The Angels and The Saints"

Collage i did for one of my absolute favourite fics,
𝑨𝒍𝒍 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑨𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒍𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒔 by Speranza.

Thank fic authors for creating such masterpieces
i will forever worship the ground you walk on 🤲

What great fanart for a great fic! I did a review of All The Angels and The Saints a few years ago (found here) in which I wrote as follows --

Not too many fanfics deal with Steve's religion in much more than a superficial way. This one, however, deals seriously and brilliantly with his struggles concerning faith in God.

"All The Angels and The Saints" by Speranza -- In which Steve Rogers loses God and finds God and loses God, and also: Bucky.

This is a wonderfully written, lengthy, full life epic of Steve 'n Bucky. It's especially interesting in its depiction of socialist and free thought in Depression-era Brooklyn, which Steve really gets into while dragging Bucky along with him. Steve's lost faith reasserts itself, however, when he is convinced that God performed a miracle by turning him into a supersoldier and allowing him to rescue Bucky. But later he turns his back on God once again when he learns of the inhumane suffering that Bucky has endured during his years as the Winter Soldier.

I also wrote another post (found here) about this fic's marvelous and perceptive "first time" scene.

The Art of Writing Fanfiction

["Fanfiction Moment"
excerpted from a larger post]

[by anuyan]

this and also the only difference between fanfic writers and writers who sell their own original works as careers is that fanfics aren’t monetized. that’s all.

being a “professional” writer doesn’t mean your works are inherently better than fanfics. I’ve read so many fics that are more professionally written than some published books.

whether or not a piece of writing is monetized has nothing to do with its quality.

i don't want to actually write a fic, i want to create
a gross scenario that i can roll around in for forever,
like a dog in a bad smell. you feel me?

i want to marinate in the vibes. but like this,
you feel me ?:
