My idea for the BROOKLYN fanzine was to illustrate an “exploded view” diagram of the Winter Soldier, but one that captured abstract components of his identity as well as his physical armaments. The Winter Soldier himself is a weapon – from his extensive hardware to his arm to his entire being – but a human weapon is still, irreconcilably, a human.

The Russian text is a poem by Anna Akhmatova from 1916, “Like a White Stone.”
Like a white stone in a deep well
one memory lies inside me.
I cannot and will not fight against it:
it is joy and it is pain.
It seems to me that anyone who looks
into my eyes will notice it immediately,
becoming sadder and more pensive
than someone listening to a melancholy tale.
I remember how the gods turned people
into things, not killing their consciousness.
And now, to keep these glorious sorrows alive,
you have turned into my memory of you.
(Two instances of words emphasized by different colored text: “memory.”)

Arm detail large view
I’m fascinated by the arm, and owe a lot of inspiration to speculation by therealdeepsix and the amazing collection of illustrations by cptsassrogers. This is stuff I love thinking about as a fan of the movie, the character, aesthetics, practical effects, and world-building in general.
I’m in the “arm can never be completely removed” camp. I think there are definitely neural attachments linking the prosthetic directly to his CNS, and many of Bucky’s actions wouldn’t be possible if the arm weren’t also internally anchored as well as augmented by a version of the serum. It would rip right out of his trunk. So I think both sections and even the majority of the external, visible prosthetic might be removed – sure – but some augmentations are too deeply implanted to ever completely detach. These include scapular and spinal fortifications, as well as artificial muscle.
I have a lot of feelings about fractured, hijacked mindscapes; rebuilt identities and rebuilt bodies; the persistence of trauma (and love!): old super-soldiers <3
