Marvel certainly did go way out of its way in
Avengers: Endgame to downplay and minimize Steve and Bucky's friendship. It was a stunning display of NO HOMO strategy. It was unfair to both characters, especially Bucky.
the fact that steve and bucky’s bond was accidentally written with so much emotion and homoerotic subtext, that the writers felt the need to gradually dismantle both characters and their relationship in order to backtrack, would actually be hilarious, if it wasn’t so infuriating. even that wasn’t enough, they had to quite literally yeet them apart, force them to live out the rest of their lives in different centuries, just to be safe. without so much as a one last heart to heart. as if the one constant undercurrent of all three cap movies isn’t how far they’d be willing to go to find each other again and again.
marvel: inseparable on both schoolyard and battlefield,
me: so they’re gonna have a scene together on the battlefield in endgame right
marvel: no
me: but you said inseparable on-
marvel: they’re not gay
me: but what does that have to do w-
marvel: steve is straight
I am still not over the last 5 minutes of the Endgame. You didn’t have to make them a couple. But to destroy everything the previous movies have set up with OOC Steve was a punch to our faces.
So Bucky has a nice middle finger for ya
