Clearly, Steve's apartment is his sanctuary and comfort, with its subdued sepia tones, old-fashioned furniture, dim lighting, all reminiscent of the forties. It's where Steve thinks about the past, trying to make sense of what he has lost. His blank, depressed reflection in the computer screen contrasts so painfully with the happiness of his WW2 footage. In the background, Steve's wartime uniform is maintained in picture-perfect condition on a lifeless, hollow mannequin, like the man he feels himself to be.

Above all else, Steve misses Bucky so much, a pain that is always with him.
But even when Bucky returns, it's only for a short while. Then Steve is lonely and heartbroken once more.
